3 - Surface
Upon first discovery, Surface quickly became known even among the star-spanning civilization we’d built as the emerald jewel of the galaxy. Overshadowing Earth’s pale blue dot, this planet’s big green blot became an instant interstellar hotspot. With nearly ten times Earth’s habitable area, our exponentially-multiplying population found a new place to converge en masse.
However, as usual, humanity got what it wanted—but not in the way we wanted it. Being a green planet, there was life already in residence! We needed to study it first. But the pressure to expand from Earth and other overpopulated colonies made settlement an inevitable process. When colonization began to surge it required a degree of collateral damage to the existing ecosystem which the people trying to learn about and protect Surface life found abhorrent.
In a phenomenon of convergent evolution on a scale never seen before, there is a wide variety of life on Surface with overlapping similarities to Earth. This kind of discovery made Surface a contentious place because people are naturally drawn to it, but also naturally predisposed to exploit it. This underlying tension contributed to Lux’s worsening relations and eventual war with Sol.
